I would post an apology to the company on my account. He should then contact the hiring manager as soon as possible and inform them of the careless mistake and remind them why he was chosen for the position. I believe most reasonable people would accept the apology. But at the same time, in the current environment, there were probably 15 other people ready to take that position and the company could easily decide to go with another candidate for the position.
